But the optimists won so we donned the gear and headed down to Currumbin on a circuit that winds back through the Gold Coast Hinterland and Tweed Valley.
Heading straight down the highway, our first stop was Elephant Rock Cafe located, not so strangely, at Elephant Rock on the beach at Currumbin.
I used to love this area when I was a child. I would walk down from our beachfront family holiday house on middle of Palm Beach and sometimes, when the tide was low, even cross Currumbin Creek. It was such an adventure.
This area is also loved by surfers and sometimes you have to fight for a park but the surf wasn't great on Sunday and there were plenty of spaces available.
Down to the food - We were a large group and the only available space was the bench right at the front of the cafe on the top level. The water views were superb but conversation was difficult.
The choices included Avo toast ($10), B&P (bacon, poached eggs, grilled tomato & thick toast) and Banana bread with ricotta, strawberries and maple syrup ($9).
The cafe was obviously very busy and the wait staff were trying to keep on top of things but losing the battle slightly. Coffees and drinks took a long time to arrive and some were forgotten. It's a common problem during school holidays when venues are stretched to their limits.
The food was as described but lacked any special touches to lift the experience.
Another place to try here would be the Currumbin Vikings Surf Life Savers Clubhouse. We could see people dining on their deck which is just metres from the water. I've had some surprisingly good meals at surf clubs but not eaten here.
Best thing about this ride was the trip back through the Currumbin and Tweed Valley. The air smelled of honeysuckle as we rode through this lush, green area. Stopping at Chillingham, we stocked up on local fruit and a few deli purchases made their way into the limited bike storage. Yum. Do stop here if you have the chance.
Bottom line: Functional food at reasonable prices. Not a gourmet treat.
