Brot, Ashgrove

Bread is really the staff of life for me - just love the stuff!

Give me a good, thick slice of bread spread liberally with fine butter and maybe not even anything else, anytime.

That's one of the reasons I was delighted to see a bread shop with a difference open its doors in suburban Ashgrove.  (For locals it's in the strip near the new Woolworths but on Waterworks Road, not in the centre).

Walk inside and you'll see there are a few tables where you can enjoy your purchases and a good selection of freshly baked loaves, rolls, baguettes and croissants, all preservative free.

In good European tradition, you'll also find some thick pretzels which would be great at beer o'clock.

There are some nice looking rolls and similar but my eyes went straight to the pastry cabinet. It was hard to choose but the chocolate croissant came recommended.  It was light and crispy on the outside and deliciously warm and creamy inside. My coffee also was well flavoured and smooth.

I took home a sour dough baguette to enjoy later - crunchy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside.

It's been open for about four weeks having moved to this location from the city. And, refreshingly, it's not part of a chain. Open 7 days.

Brot, 119 waterworks Rd, Ashgrove.
