Sleeping around - InterContinental Sydney

From the street the InterContinental doesn't reveal much.  It's built around the restored 1851 Treasury Building so the exterior is a combo of old and new, but once you are past the entrance and into the foyer there's a lot of old world charm that sets this hotel apart from the flock.

As far as inner city hotels go, it's within easy walking distance of most of what you'll want to see.  And if it's Circular Quay access that you're after, then this one is a good choice as it's just on the edge of the action.

The lobby opens into an atrium which is a definite plus, adding a light, airy appeal.  It also makes the most of the building's old world features.

Perhaps the biggest plus is that each of the 509 guest rooms has a picture frame view. Mine looked over the eastern harbour and was mesmerising both day and night. There was even a window seat where you could relax and take it all in!

The bathroom was comfortable and spacious with a good selection of bathroom products. Another plus was the supplied hair dryer was powerful enough to dry hair in normal time, unlike many of those 'stuck-on-the-wall' jobs.  The room also included a desk which was workable and took in the window view, although internet was a pay extra option - an issue I believe should be addressed industry wide and supplied free of charge.

The breakfast buffet had a good range of choices with attentive staff who put every effort into making a guest's stay enjoyable.

My room was a king deluxe eastern harbour view - $345 a night.

Bottom line - not a cheap option but plenty of pluses that lift it above the average.
