Milkbar is a newly opened gem at Ashgrove. It's the sort of place where you can take the kids and granny and you'll all have a great time.
The kids will love the hundreds and thousands sandwiches with blue and pink dinosaurs. Too cute for words. Granny (and me) will love the milkshakes with real waxed straws and everything else as well.
I've already blogged the cupcakes at Milkbar, which are seriously good, but here's a report on one of their breakfast options.
My standard brekkie (for comparison purposes) is two eggs, bacon and tomato with toast. This one is a little mixed up but the closest I could find on the Milkbar menu - an EBLT $11.90. If you are familar with a BLT (Bacon, lettuce and tomato on/in a roll) just add an egg and you've got it.
It came looking very cute and was a real taste sensation. There was a touch of relish and aioli that really made it all come together. The only downside is that it can be hard to eat. My eggs were a little runny and ended up spilling out from the sandwich and all down my fingers. As my companion, fellow food writer Alison Cotes, described - 'so not a first date meal'. (Note Alison - I did not include the photo of you eating with your mouth full - you can pay me later.)
Dripping egg aside, it was a delicious and filling brekkie that I would repeat.
The standard BLT option (bacon, lettuce, tomato relish and fresh tomato) is available for $10.90. Other options include a Breakfast Burger (hamburger, beetroot, caramelized onion, tomato relish, and mayo, which is also $10.90 or a Wicked Burger which includes everything plus breakfast chips $15.90.
You can also be healthy with Cinnamon fruit toast and butter $4.50 or Barambah yoghurt, topped with honey and fresh fruit of the day $5.90.
Milkbar also has a range of fresh fruit drinks, smoothies and shakes ranging in price from $5.50 to $6.50. Think Pineapple mint frappe, Fresh banana and cinnamon smoothie and Espresso ice coffee.
Breakfast is available until noon. Best of all there is ample parking underneath.
The coffee is Merlo.
Milkcafe is run by John and Amanda Scott who are ex Continental Cafe. Look for their new stamp on Cafe Mamma in Windsor.
Bottom line: This café is a retro gem and worth visiting. Do try the cupcakes as well. I have included a photo of these just to make you drool!
