Coaldrakes, Emporium, Fortitude Valley

Although Coaldrakes is primarily a bookshop, and a good one, it's also a place where you can get a decent cup of coffee and something to eat.

It was lunchtime when I stopped for a coffee at Coaldrakes in the Emporium complex in the Valley.  But as I'd been tasting cheese all morning, judging in the Brisbane Cheese Awards, I was not up for lunch.

However duty before pleasure as I spied a cupcake that had to be tried. I was seduced by the large blob of icing on the top and the cute chocolate decoration and the first bite lived up to the anticipation. It was a little cold, having just come from the cold cabinet, but the light, gluten free cake was still delicious.  The icing was a little hard, but I suspect it would be better when it warmed up.

Coaldrake's menu includes a Big Brekky with scrambled eggs, tamarind chutney, Turkish toast, ham, grilled tomato and avocado.  There's also homemade beans with Turkish bread.

Bottom line: good cupcakes, but if you're after cupcakes, Poppy's is just around the corner.
