Querk Espresso, Wilston

If ever a place lived up to its name it would be this tiny coffee shop on busy Kedron Brook Road at Wilston.

Perched on corner, the converted old shop has some of the most diverse seating styles I've seen - a true quirky collection of stools cast off chairs and chests as tables.  The only thing that matches are the milk crates. Quirky humour abounds as well - Mona Lisa with a moustache? Only at Querk!

I'm here at 9.30 on a Friday morning for a late breakfast and the place is pumping. Long after the breakfast rush has finished at other eateries the queue for coffee just keeps getting longer.

Many of them obviously are regulars, judging by the bright greetings and banter from behind the counter.  No surprise really, this is a great spot - the sort of neighborhood hang out that would put a smile on anyone's face.

The food offering is small but mouth watering. I order smashed avocado with haloumi on sourdough and struggle to finish the generous serve - just can't resist the combo of a thicker than normal slice of Sol bread coated with Querk's signature olive oil blend and topped with grilled, slightly chewy and not overly salty haloumi. Bent over a chest as a table, I'm struggling to eat the thick bread slices - knife and fork or fingers? - I wish there were a few more tables where I could eat a little more easily.

The kitchen is the size of a matchbox, so the rest of the menu is easily prepared stuff but I'm sure there are plenty of hidden touches that lift the offerings above the ordinary.

Querk is not new to Kedron Brook Road - it's just celebrated its first birthday - but it's going to be here for a while.

Coffee is Genovese and it's very good.

Querk is open seven days
