Jandals, Clontarf

The decor is quirky but the welcome is certainly warm at Jandals, opposite the beach front at Clontarf on the Hornibrook Esplanade.

And if the name sounds familiar it's a hint to the owner's New Zealand heritage - jandals is the New Zealand name for sandals or thongs.

The decor was looking a bit scruffy on our  visit but that was quickly explained by the cafe's imminent move down the road.  So if you decide to check this one out, either go quickly or cool your heels while they move, a journey that will see them out of operation for a few weeks.

The joy here, apart from the decor, is the range of home made slices in the cabinet. They lack the polish you'll find in other cafes but I'll cheerfully exchange that for the freshness of treats made on site. The display changes daily but there's a fair choice based on a collection of NZ favourites.

We all settled on the enormous scones which came in date or berry varieties. I thought my berry scone needed a little sweetness for my taste but the others were happy with theirs.

The star moment of the day was when one of the staff brought out a plate of freshly made vanilla slices for us to view. Of course I couldn't resist, but the slice was so large we divided it between four.  I was glad that we did as the filling was very rich and creamy, probably a little too creamy for me.

Katie  decided to try a vegetable flan as well which she pronounced delicious at exceptionally good value at $7.50.

Bottom line: A little slice of home for New Zealanders and a great value stop for everyone else.  Looking forward to another slice at the new look Jandals.
