Peasant scoops Savour Australia awards
Peasant Restaurant, famed for its authentic Spanish menu with nods to the wine and tapas bars of Barcelona, Seville and Madrid via Buenos Aires, was last night named Brisbane’s Best Overall Restaurnt as well as winning Best Speciality Restaurant at the 2011 Savour Australia™ Awards for Excellence, hosted by Restaurant and Catering Queensland.
After swooning over the pork belly on a long Sunday lunch recently, the award comes as no surprise.
Peasant beat out some of Brisbane’s leading names in Tukka Restaurant at West End, Libertine also at Paddington, Alegria Bistro Bar in Milton and five others for Best Speciality Restaurant, and then was then given the judges choice award as Best Overall Restaurant.
Peasant owner Jamie Webb said while it was certainly wonderful to be recognised, he paid tribute to his team of chefs, wait staff and behind the scenes people who make Peasant the experience it is. “What gives us pride is the thanks we get every night and every day from happy customers, that’s why we are in this business.”
Peasant Restaurant is known for its authenticity of menu, list of Spanish, Portuguese and Argentinian wines and setting – long shared wooden tables, graffiti covered ceilings, walls of wines, a smokey-wooden interior, and a great sense of ‘family’ from the wait staff.
Jamie Webb has also just opened Cabiria, a wine bar, luncheonette and oyster bar next to Peasant in the space formerly occupied by the Barracks butcher with an expansion taking over the verandah and a pergola area onto the walk way. The menu is light and snacky with some sandwiches for lunch - not the best option if you are hungry for a a full dinner. I'll be heading back there when not starving for dinner to try Harry’s Bar Egg Sandwich featuring organic soft boiled egg, Ortiz anchovy, mayo and chives or the Cabiria Reuben – an all-time favourite of homemade corn beef, gruyere, cornichons and mustard on rye.
