Hey hey it's Harveys with a new look

A James Street favourite, Harveys in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley has had a revamp with a new long black bean-timber bar and a glass-enclosed air-conditioned area for dining in all seasons.

While the décor has been updated, some things haven’t changed including the ever popular Asian chicken salad which chef/owner and all-round nice guy PJ McMillan says is too wildly popular to ever come off the menu.

PJ describes his food as honest fare, created and designed to reflect the best of the regions and day-to-day availability and I can only agree.

He says “The new Harveys is intended not as a cafe or bistro but more of a dining room with a friendly pop-in-anytime bar and good drinks menu, somewhere guests feel like good friends or simply a part of our family. This bar will embrace our relaxed and friendly philosophy.”

I sampled a good selection of the menu sharing plates with friend Elaine.

Shaved 'Shultz' smoked Waygu beef with celeriac remoulade, white anchovies and peppery leaves

Asian chicken salad, coriander, mint, peanuts, coconut and tamarind dressing.

Haloumi-crumbed chicken schnitzel with creamed potato, broccolini, fetta, capers and lemon

Slow-roasted pork belly with pickled red cabbage, soft fennel, apple and mustard

Steamed passionfruit pudding, lemon curd, coconut, meringue and double cream - my fave of the day!

The bistro is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week and for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

Bottom line: Lovely light atmosphere, great for daytime but also works well at night.  Food that’s full of flavour and easy to eat.  Great chef, great venue.
