The distinctive aroma of coffee was my clue. I thought I was lost, or at least outside the wrong building. I was looking for Elixir Coffee in a Stafford industrial estate and just behind the door was the motherlode.
This coffee shop might be located in an industry area, but the patrons are definitely a mixed bunch of genuine coffee lovers who have discovered this source of great coffee.
With it's stylish red and black interior, Elixir is a newish venture for three members of the Narciso family, Mum Carmel and sons Jason and David. The family's coffee experience started back in the mid 1980s when Carmel ran the Cosmopolitan Coffee Shop in Brunswick Street and Jason and David grew up amongst the coffee beans.
Now Jason and David are the ones in charge of the coffee which is roasted on the premises to a secret recipe every day.
And its a good blend. I tried Narciso – which is a medium to full bodied espresso with a hint of maple syrup and the Espresso Blend – a modern espresso version with a rich, chocolate like finish. I could have drunk them all day but then I would have been bouncing off the ceiling!
Carmel keeps the cake cabinet filled with a delicious array of goodies that changes weekly. I was impressed by her cupcake which had a thick ganache icing with lemon curd over a crumbly butter cake base. It was very moreish.
Elixir is open for breakfast with a menu that includes scrambled eggs, croissants, raisin toast, muesli and banana bread.
The lunch menu ranges from Turkish breads with assorted filllings, calzones, fritatas, quiches, arancinis, wraps and sandwiches.
Elixir have a Coffee Appreciation Course with 90 minute classes to teach coffee lovers how to make a perfect coffee every time, complete with the art of steaming ‘silky smooth’ milk, pouring all styles of coffee, the correct dosing and tamping styles, and more. You can bring your own machine to the class or opt to use an on-site machine.
